You might think that all it takes is a cherry blossom tree in your suburban park to understand what we are talking about. But believe me: experiencing hanami in Japan is something else.
It is the sum total of everything: the mild climate, the collective energy, the care with which every detail is experienced, the fact that every citizen-from the salaryman to the old lady-takes a moment to look up and marvel. It is a total cultural experience as well as a sensory explosion.
And then there are the places: Kyoto with its petal-framed temples, Himeji Castle that looks like something out of a dream, the canals of Kanazawa or Nara Park with deer walking among the cherry trees. Every place becomes a living postcard.
When to go and how to organize
Flowering occurs between late March and early April, but it changes every year and varies from south to north. In Tokyo and Kyoto the highlight period is usually between March 25 and April 10, while in Hokkaido it even reaches late April.
The advice is to keep flexible, follow Japan Meteorological Agency bulletins and, if you can, plan your trip with strategic stops that follow the bloom.

📍 Tokyo - Ueno Park and Chidorigafuchi
In the heart of the capital, Ueno Park is home to more than 1,000 cherry trees and transforms into a huge urban picnic during hanami. Chidorigafuchi, on the other hand, gives one of the most romantic walks along the Imperial Palace moat, with opportunities to rent a boat and row among the petals.
