Calabria Expedition: Ionian, Tyrrhenian, and Sila
Calabria was once Magna Graecia, then Roman, Byzantine, and Norman. Each era has left indelible marks preserved in archaeological parks, villages, abbeys, and castles.
But beyond history, there’s the sea here. Actually, there are two of them.
The Ionian Sea, open and bright. The Tyrrhenian Sea, deeper and wilder. And then the Sila, a silent plateau where you breathe an air that seems to purify even your thoughts.
This expedition was born to bring all of this together, without choosing just one part.

Why Calabria
I chose Calabria because it is a land in the heart of the Mediterranean that still preserves the passage of the ages: here, history is not theory, it is landscape, villages, castles.
Traditions are alive and well, from ceramics to textiles, from hand-loomed work to cuisine that varies from province to province.
It’s a region that receives les attention (except for the RAI New Year’s eve celebrations), and for this very reason, it remains authentic. The sea around Tropea can easily compete with that of Sardinia, and Pizzo, for example, with the Murat Castle overlooking the cliffs, tells stories worth listening to.
We only have a week, so we’ll choose our destinations carefully, but I assure you there’s no shortage of things to see here.
Where are we going:
Our base will be on the Ionian coast. We’ll move to the Tyrrhenian Sea, near Vibo Valentia, to experience the sea on a SUP and observe the marine life that inhabits it.
There will be no shortage of mountains, more precisely the Sila, but also the Ionian Sea with its breathtaking cliffs.
Passeremo il nostro tempo eplorando:
- along the pearl beaches of the Ionian Sea of Catanzaro
- in the ancient villages of the hinterland
- in the archaeological parks among Roman remains, Byzantine abbeys and Greek temples
- in Sila, where we will sleep in a cabin immersed in the woods
It will be a dynamic week, with short but targeted transfers to capture the region’s spirit.
What will we experience
We will go out to sea in an active but accessible way:
- SUP explorations along the Tyrrhenian coast
- snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the Ionian Sea
- exploration of a wreck a few meters from the surface
- optional freediving sessions for those who want to work on depth more consciously
The mountain
- two days in the woods and one night in a cabin in Sila
- Passante lake
- easy trekking in the woods at dawn
Without forgetting the cultural part:
- Scolacium archaeological park, between Roman remains and a Byzantine abbey
- archaeological area of Crotone with the remains of an ancient Greek temple
- villages and local traditions
- authentic Calabrian cuisine, experienced between beaches and typical restaurants
This expedition is a balance between movement and discovery.
