Middle East conflict: what’s new for travelers (flights, stopovers, and security)

In the last few days, many people have written to me asking for information on the situation in the Middle East.
The war between the United States and Iran has brought renewed attention to an already geopolitically complex region, and inevitably, the issue has begun to affect the world of travel as well.
The military escalation has led several countries to close or restrict their airspace, immediately impacting international traffic. Thousands of flights have been canceled or diverted, and many passengers have been stranded at transit airports, especially in Gulf hubs like Dubai, Doha, and Abu Dhabi.
According to data reported by flight monitoring agencies and reported by several international media outlets, over 12,000 flights have been canceled due to the conflict and airspace closures in the region.
This is because the Middle East represents one of the main corridors for global air traffic between Europe, Asia, and Oceania. When some of this airspace is closed for security reasons, airlines must completely reroute, with knock-on effects on connections, delays, and cancellations.
For this reason, many flights are now being diverted, suspended, or operated on different schedules and routes.
But what does all this mean for travellers?
Don't panic: staying informed is the first thing to do.
The first thing I want to tell you is very simple: don’t panic.
When geopolitical crises like this one occur, the biggest mistake is to rely on partial or sensationalized information.
The most important thing is to stay updated through reliable sources, both Italian and international.

If you have a trip already booked—especially to Asia, Africa, or Oceania with a stopover in the Gulf—staying updated is the first step in figuring out what to do.
Airlines are constantly updating their routes, and many situations are resolved within a few days or weeks.
In these cases it is essential:
- monitoring airline official communications
- check for any changes in route or stopover
- check the indications of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Always register on the Farnesina website
Another thing I always recommend to those traveling abroad is to register on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs portals.
These are extremely useful tools, yet still underutilized. There are two main websites through which the Ministry, if necessary, can track your presence abroad and easily contact you:
These sites are fundamental (for the Farnesina) especially in crisis situations such as:
- war
- natural disasters
- riots or political instability
- emergency evacuations
Registering means allowing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to:
- contact you quickly
- provide you with official updates
- coordinate any repatriations
- assist you in case of emergency
In situations of international tension this can really make a difference.
Why travel insurance is essential
This situation reminds us of something very important: traveling with insurance is not optional.
It’s important to clarify one thing: in the event of war or armed conflict, travel insurance does not normally cover cancellations caused by war, as these are considered force majeure and unforeseeable.
